The lowdown on Perimenopause: Could you be in it?

The lowdown on Perimenopause: Could you be in it?

Most women don’t consider the prospect of menopause until around age 50, but research is showing that due to vastly different biological clocks, women could actually be entering menopause earlier than this.

A woman can actually fluctuate in and out of a perimenopausal state for up to 10-13 years before arriving at true menopause, so it’s normal to be experiencing bodily and hormonal changes at around age 40.

Perimenopause is known as the stage prior to menopause, and can begin on average around age 45, lasting anywhere from 4 to 6 years.

It is caused by changing hormone levels in the body (particularly estrogen) due to the ovaries running out of eggs. For the majority of women, your ovaries don’t stop producing eggs immediately, and this “winding down” period can take several years to elapse.

Characteristics of Perimenopause

  • Changes to your period - Your menstrual cycle becoming more irregular, lighter, heavier, longer, shorter or painful could potentially be symptoms of perimenopause.
It can also be associated with symptoms of menopause such as:
  • Fatigue
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Incontinence
  • Decreased libido

Symptoms are your bodies way of letting you know that it isn’t receiving the support it needs and your body communicates this to you via hormones. Your body need support through good nutrition, exercise, and a healthy emotional state through work/life balance.

More generally, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help to relieve unpleasant symptoms of perimenopause.

How can Modibodi help with perimenopause or menopausal symptoms?

Irregular/Heavy Bleeding

As your body enters menopause, its normal for your usual menstrual cycle to be thrown off course and for your days to be less predictable. This can leave women feeling very anxious and unsettled about their next period arrival, but it doesn’t have to be this way!

Women also don’t want to wear pads as they are bulky and uncomfortable (not to mention terrible for the environment) which can leave you feeling as though your options are limited.

Modibodi is designed to protect you from these unexpected leakages, so you don’t need to be paranoid and you can still wear white skirts! Modibodi garments with a moderate or heavy absorbency are perfect for unexpected leaks or particularly heavy flows.

If you’re wearing a pair of Modibodi’s then you can go about your day with peace of mind knowing that whatever happens, you can remain cool and confident.

Our new heavy absorbency range is arriving around March/April and features a protective gusset which runs from the front all the way to the back of the garment for added security and protection. Hot Flashes/Night sweats

Being extremely hot to the point of discomfort is very disruptive and can interfere with your daily activities and sleeping patterns.

Modibodi garments are designed with our Patented Modifier Technology which has moisture wicking properties. The garment actively works to wick moisture away from your body and leave you feeling both fresh and dry. These are great for wearing at night or on particularly hot days, as they do the work for you in cooling down your body and keeping you at a bearable temperature level. You won’t have to worry about sweating and the uncomfortable damp feeling that comes with it as your magic Modibodi’s do all the work for you! Our Moisture Wicking range is perfect for everyday coolness and freshness, and loved by women dealing with both perimenopause and menopause symptoms!

The most important thing to remember is listen to your body and if you are concerned about any changes then seek professional medical advice from your GP. The female body has amazing capabilities and we shouldn’t live in fear of menopause, it just marks the beginning of a new stage in our lives.

Ensuring you are happy and comfortable is always a priority, so surround yourself with positive and supportive friends and family and people you can talk to, and look after yourself!
